Sailing & Nutrition-The New England Solo Twin on a J-105

Cooper’s experience with nutrition sailing in The New England Solo Twin

The “Solo Twin” as it is known is an annual sailing race starting and finishing in Newport, RI. It is sailed either single handed or double-handed and is typically a 100-120 mile offshore race from Newport around Block Island over to Noman’s Land, Buzzard’s Bay tower and back to Newport.

In such inshore waters with upwards of 45 boats all racing keeping a look out while sailing is paramount and so the crew is typically up all night. Due to the relatively short course and typical closeness of the racing the crews historically eat sandwiches, drink soda & coffee and snack on Snickers and Power bars. The result of this poor nutrition is, in my experience, a combination of tingl’y sugar rush behind the eyes, a mouth that feels like the bottom of a bird cage whose owners have been away for two weeks and an upset digestive system. This physical discomfort is compounded by the desire to go home and crash to make up for the 28-30 hours with out sleep.

My experiences with a variety of Herbalife Nutritional products in the 2010 race were completely opposite and vastly superior in every way from my previous experiences in the race (or any other overnight sailing activity).

In short I had loads of energy all night, lots of focus,  was never hungry or felt in need of junk food, never felt tired nor tingly behind the eyes, no digestive distress and even after 26 plus hours with out sleep, not especially tired by the time we had finished and cleaned up the boat about 0745.
